Building collapse leaves one worker dead
Five construction workers pouring cement in a five-story condo had to be rescued and dug out from under the rubble after it collapsed on top of them Tuesday morning. One man, 54, died later at the hospital from his injuries.
The accident occurred in Brooklyn. The architecture firm that designed the condo have had a checkered past with the Buildings Department. In the past, several of their projects have had serious flaws. In the two-person firm, both architects at one point surrendered their certifications. At one point in 2002, inspectors found problems in over fifty projects designed by one of the architects.
Investigators believe the accident occurred because the contractors were trying to cut corners. The company has been issued nine violations by the city and more are expected. OSHA currently investigating the collapse.
Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the victim.
