Injured St. Cloud fireman denied workers’ compensation benefits

A St. Cloud fireman who suffered injuries while responding to a fire several months ago received a denial of his workers’ compensation claim, SC Times reported on December 14.

Freeport volunteer firefighter,  50-year-old Jerry Hartsworm, suffered injuries while responding to a barn fire that broke out last May. Hartsworm was admitted to a hospital and spent weeks out of work recovering after he was knocked unconscious in the fire. He was appalled to learn that his workers’ compensation claim was denied by the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust (LMCIT). The insurance company stated that his injuries were triggered by an existing health condition and was not the result of responding to the call. Though LMCIT finally covered the bill for his physical injuries, they are still denying treatment for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder Hartsworm claims was caused by the incident.
