The trooper fired several shots but did not hit the drunk driver. Officers found and arrested the man in Virgina on Saturday.

The labor commissioner attributes this to Minnestoa’s safer workplace environments.

The report released today also shows that paid workers’ compensation claims fell 43 percent between 1997 and 2010. However, medical treatment for workplace injuries increased the annual cost per claim by more than five percent above wages since 1997.

In 2010, the workers’ compensation system was at its lowest since 1997 at $1.25 per $100 of payroll.

According to researchers for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, lack of can cause workplace injuries and even illness. About 30 percent of American workers as of 2000 did not get enough sleep, up from 24 percent in the 1980s.

Lack or inefficient sleep can be contributed to factors such as working irregular or night hours, shift timing, and work demands. NIOSH suggests shorter work shifts, such as five eight-hour shifts or ten four-hour shifts.

Working long hours can lead to higher rates of occupational injuries, depression, and poor health; a decline in physical ability and mental function; increased risk of illness and injury; and an increased risk of long-term health problems.

Last week a woman who was hit by a drunk driver in early March died from her injuries. The woman and her husband were critically injured after a drunk driver crossed a median and slammed into their car in Blaine.

According to the Anoka County Sheriff’s Department, the young female driver also died a few days after the accident. Toxicology tests revealed she had a blood alcohol level of 0.12 at the time of the accident.

The husband, the only survivor of the crash, has been moved to a rehab facility where he is learning how to walk again.

Our deepest sympathies are with the woman’s friends and family.

A large extended family of 18 relatives became victims of a tragic auto accident over the weekend after the 17 year-old driver of the motor home lost control and crashed into a ravine in Kansas. The family was on their way back home to Jordan, Minnesota after spending spring break in Texas.

Five family members were killed in the crash, ranging in age from ten to 25 years-old, and 13 others were seriously injured. According to authorities, none of the deceased were wearing their seatbelts.

Investigators have not been able to determine the exact cause for the crash. The teenage driver, who remains in critical condition, had the proper license to operate the motor home and family friends say he was an experienced driver.

Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of those affected by this terrible accident.
