Work-related injuries in reclycing industry declined under new single-sort system

Fewer recycling workers in Minneapolis sustained injuries this season while doing their job under the single-sort system, according to a news report on February 8.

Under the new system, the number of injuries that recycling workers sustained decreased compared to last winter due to the fact that workers now utilize a single cart to carry waste to the truck and a motorized arm to pour the recycled products into the truck. A lot of workers were reportedly injured in past years while using the old system because they carried bags themselves to the truck, had to place the recycled items in certain places, and secure them to the truck.

City director of solid waste Dave Herberholz said the new system is a breakthrough. According to data, it has saved the city $250,000 in workers’ compensation.
